Chapter Sixteen

NICKI HAD SQUEEZED her eyes shut. She could barely hear outside in the hall, “Nicki, are you in there?”

She perked her head up and yelled back. “Yeah. Help me!”

The guy slapped her again and reached his hand to the doorknob to lock it, but Nicki felt a slamming weight against the door. The guy managed to push the door back into place and was starting to turn the lock. Nicki found the strength to start fighting back again. He was distracted, and that worked in her favor.

She slapped at his face, and she knew it wasn’t enough to hurt or stop him. But it had the effect of a gnat—it was annoying and distracting and pulled his attention away from the doorknob. And that’s when she felt the door press forward further. It hit her head and forced both her body and the would-be rapist’s off balance.

Sean wedged his leg between the door and the jamb, and her captor slammed against Nicki’s body to drive the door into Sean’s leg. The guy pulled back to get the momentum to do it again, and Nicki used the opportunity to make her hand into a fist that she drove into his crotch. “Bitch!” he yelled again, once more hitting her on the face but using his other hand to cup the wounded area.

Nicki felt the pressure on her back from the door again and moved out of the way now that she was free enough to. She kicked the guy in the shin and felt cool air rush in the cramped, smelly space as Sean made it in.

Sean barely glanced at her, his eyes maintaining focus on the guy. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” she said, feeling naked. She reached down and pulled up her panties and jeans. She wasn’t sure how it happened because it went too fast, but Sean grabbed the man’s head by a handful of hair and slammed his temple against the sink. Once on the floor, Sean straddled him and started beating him in the face with his fists. Nicki felt horrified as blood splattered on the floor and Sean’s face.

Jesse busted into the tight space and yelled, “Trav! In here.” He touched Sean on the shoulder. “Whoa, man, that’s enough.”

But Sean couldn’t hear his friend. He pummeled the man again and Jesse started pulling at Sean. It wasn’t until Travis joined him a few seconds later that they were able to pull him off.

Nicki felt nauseous. The guy’s face looked like fresh hamburger.

Jesse held Sean’s face, forcing the man to look him in the eyes. “You okay, bro?”

Sean didn’t say anything. He looked crazed. There was a questioning look in his blue eyes and he blinked five times and took a deep breath. It almost looked like something returned inside him.

“Talk to me, man.”

Sean shook his head. “Yeah. Yeah. I’m fine.”

“We need to get out of here.”

Travis said, “Too late. Don’t you hear that?”

Nicki did. It was the sound of sirens. And the rest of the night was a blur, but she did know that her three friends were arrested.
